Minor Programs
MINOR IN THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE PRAXES
The Minor in Theatre and Performance Praxes provides students the opportunity to engage in the critical and the practical study of the theatre through praxes. The program offers the study of the art form in both theoretical historical context and the practice of live performance – including acting, dramaturgy and directing, and design.

The students in the minor program should be able to:

Apply discipline-specific skills to the creation of performance

Perform collaboration, an important feature of performance-making, in critical and creative thinking
-
Produce creative work that demonstrate intersections of personal, aesthetic, and socio-political ideas
MINOR IN APPLIED THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE
The Minor Program in Applied Theatre and Performance is envisioned to help students adapt theatre skills to achieve their goals in non-traditional performance contexts and styles. They could work as performance artists in museums, use the theatre to raise awareness around social issues, create encounters that celebrate community, and engage children and youth in learning opportunities. The students apply traditional theatre skills such as acting, directing, and stage managements in applied theatre careers such as arts/events management, project and festival curation and management, and even cultural policy.

The students in the minor program should be able to:

Apply key concepts in theatre and performance in non-traditional theatrical setting such as education, mental health, therapy, political advocacy, environmental justice, community organizing, social services and justice reform.

Engage theatre and performance as aspects of transformative change in non-traditional performance contexts and styles; and
-
Produce dramaturgical works and/or projects using a range of strategies, including collaborative techniques and interdisciplinary methodologies in applied theatre and performance.
Admission Requirements
(Theatre)
Interested applicants are advised to submit the following:

Recommendation letter from a former professor or from a theatre artist;

Proof of completion of least two (2) semesters or thirty (30) academic units;
-
Certificate of good academic standing from the student’s home unit;
-
Fully accomplished application form; and
-
Written application letter addressed to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters through the Department Chair, endorsed by the student’s program adviser and noted by the student’s Dean.
MINOR IN
RHETORIC AND INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
The Minor in Rhetoric and Interpersonal Communication program is conceptualized for non-Speech Communication majors who wish to learn theories and methodologies, issues and concerns, as well as strategies and techniques of rhetorical and relational communication. In this minor program, students are trained to be persuasive, civic-minded, and socially-engaged communicators.

The program is designed to critically examine human communication as a social, political, and cultural phenomenon. It hopes to enrich the students’ analytical lenses in the understanding of self, society, and culture.

At the end of the program, graduates should be able to:

Examine the significance of speech communication principles in enriching one’s disciplinal knowledge;

Critically analyze communication phenomena through the lens of rhetorical and interpersonal theories;

Demonstrate criticality and awareness of self as Filipino in engagement with social issues; and
-
Exhibit communicative competence in articulating analyses of communication phenomena.
Admission Requirements
Speech Communication

Completion of at least two semesters or 30 academic units in his/her home unit
-
A cumulative weighted average of at least 2.0
-
A grade of 1.75 or better in Speech 30
-
Letter of application addressed to the Chairperson of the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts and endorsed by the student’s home unit program adviser
