Our First Year

Isang taon na ang lumipas nang sinimulan natin ang #DSCTAdiyamante2034. Hindi naging madali ang ating paglalakbay dala na rin ng pandaigdigang krisis sa pampublikong kalusugan dulot ng COVID-19. Patuloy pa rin ang isang realidad na binabansagan ng ilang komentarista bilang VUCA— volatile, uncertain, complex, at ambiguous. Hanggang ngayon ay nananatili ang ating pagkabalisa at maaaring nawawalan pa rin tayo ng motibasyon dahil sa mga pabago-bagong balangkas ng pangangailangan. Dumating na rin tayo sa panahong hindi tayo makausad dahil sa kawalan ng katiyakan kung papaano lalabanan ang isang kaaway na hindi man lamang nakikita. Napakahirap ng decision making at naparalisa ang ating nakasanayang normal. Sa katunayan, hanggang ngayon, overwhelming pa rin ang ating pakiramdam sa naturang bagong normal. 

 

Lalong naging masidhi ang ating mundong ginagalawan dahil sa tila ‘di mapigilang paglipana ng disimpormasyon at fake news. At nito lang nagdaang pambansang eleksiyon, nakita natin ang saklaw ng epekto ng historical revisionism. The national elections affected our small community in the Department along with the larger Filipino society. In fact, even during the campaign period, we felt how the distortion of history worked in favor of a greedy and vindictive administration.

 

Bagaman nakalugar tayo sa isang realidad na walang kasiguraduhan, sa aspektong politikal man o pangkalusugan, hindi ito naging balakid upang umusad ang Departamento tungo sa layunin nitong maging sentro ng pag-aaral, pananaliksik, at pampublikong serbisyo sa Komunikasyong Pasalita, Sining Panteatro, at Araling Pagtatanghal hindi lamang sa Pilipinas kundi maging sa Timog-Silangang Asya. In other words, we really tried to counter the volatile reality with the strengthening of our vision. 

 

We accepted and embraced “change” as a constant and unpredictable feature of our working environment. As Filipinos, we are known to think of crisis as both the presence of danger and the promise of opportunity. We challenged ourselves to be more critical and to be more vigilant. COVID-19 has been continuously threatening our everyday lives. The virus affected our pedagogical modalities, our creative practices, and our objects of research. Hopelessness swept through the nation after the turn-out of the national elections. Nonetheless, these also paved the way for our Department to think of other opportunities for speech, theatre, and performance to strive, to grow, and to survive. 

 

We successfully hosted the 14th Annual Conference of the Asian Theatre Working Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research. We successfully launched our first Bantay Boto program through Persuasion and the Polls: The Rhetorical Work of Objects and Bodies in the Philippine Elections. Dulaang UP streamed two of its most critically-acclaimed productions: Ang Huling Lagda ni Apolinario Mabini and Nana Rosa.

Despite the complexity of our current situation, we still managed to react competently. We were able to clearly communicate with our stakeholders, our students especially, that we will continue to provide the best service as educators and artist-scholars of speech communication and theatre arts to the community. The VUCA reality notwithstanding, we witnessed how we promoted collaborations to work effectively in this unpredictable environment. 

 

We witnessed how the speech communication division collaborated with various colleges and Departments of the University to challenge the way we think of our voting consciousness. We witnessed how the theatre division continued to work with institutional partners, academic and non-academic, to develop relevant academic programs to benefit our UPD community. 

 

Banggitin din nating hindi naging balakid ang pandemya at ang kinakaharap na politikal na krisis upang hindi magpatuloy ang productivity ng ating mga guro, kawani, at mag-aaral. Sa halip, naging instrumento pa ang mga ito sa ating mga likha – sa larangan ng pananaliksik, sa malikhaing gawain, at sa pampublikong serbisyo. The achievement of every member of our Department is a Department achievement! 

 

Salute to the late Professor Emeritus Antonio O. Mabesa for having been conferred, finally, the title of Pambansang Alagad ng Sining ng Pilipinas para sa Teatro. Hindi maikakaila ang malaking kontribusyon ni Prop. Mabesa sa theatre education sa loob at labas ng ating Unibersidad. Ang kaniyang impluwensiya ay abot hanggang Mindanao. Apat na ang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining na produkto ng ating Departamento: si Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero, si Kidlat Tahimik, si Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio, at ngayon, si Antonio O. Mabesa.

Pagpupugay rin sa bagong University Artist mula sa Departamento, Prop. Banaue Miclat-Janssen.  Inaprubahan ng Lupon ng mga Rehente noong 4 Nobyembre 2021 sa kanilang ika-1365 pulong si Prop. Miclat-Janssen bilang Artist II dahil sa kaniyang kontribusyon sa sining ng pag-arte. Sa kasalukuyan, apat na ang University Artist ng ating Departamento: sina Dr. Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete, Prop. Josefina Estrella, Prop. Dexter M. Santos, ang inyo pong lingkod, at si Prop. Miclat-Janssen.

 

Mahalaga rin ang pagkilalang iginawad kay G. Archie Clataro, Administrative Assistant ng ating tanggapan, bilang Gawad Tsanselor sa Natatanging Kawani 2022. Kinilala si G. Clataro dahil sa kaniyang pambihirang ambag sa pamamahala ng produksiyong pangentablado hindi lamang sa Dulaang UP kundi pati na rin sa mga institutional event ng Unibersidad.

Ilan rin sa ating mga kasamahan sa Departamento ang umani ng fellowship at grant mula sa iba’t ibang akademikong institusyon. Noong Setyembre 2021, nakatanggap ng fellowship si G. John Carlo V. Pagunaling mula sa Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies. Nitong nakaraang Enero, nakatanggap naman ng fellowship si G. Rex Sandro M. Nepomuceno upang makalakok sa KRITIKA La Salle National Workshop on Art and Cultural Criticism. 

 

Ang inyo pong lingkod ay kinilala ng Department of Science and Technology - National Research Council of the Philippines bilang achievement awardee sa disiplina ng Humanidades sa nakaraang Pangkalahatang Asemblea na ginanap noong Marso 2022. 

 

Pagpupugay rin sa patuloy na pananaliksik at paggawa ng mga malikhaing obra ng ating kaguruan. Sa nakaraang taon, nakapagtala tayo ng 12 pananaliksik mula sa Departamento na nailathala sa mga akademikong dyornal o naging kabanata sa mga antolohiya. Pito rito ay nagkamit na ng International Publication Award mula sa UP System. Pagbati rin sa ating mga gurong-artistang patuloy ang paglikha ng mga obra sa gitna ng pandemya. Ilan sa mga ito ay nagkamit ng pinansiyal na tulong mula sa mga napaka-competetive na research grant ng ating Unibersidad: ang Enhanced Creative Work and Research Grant, ang PhD Incentive Award, at ang Source of Solution Grant. Siyempre, maituturing na “act of defiance” sa gitna ng pandemya ang pagbasa ng mga pananaliksik sa mga kumperensiya – online man o pisikal.

 

Huwag din nating kalilimutan ang mga karangalang nakamit ng ating mga mag-aaral. Sa tulong ng ating mga fakulti, nahikayat na maging aktibo ang ating mga estudyante na magbasa ng mga pananaliksik sa iba’t ibang akademikong kumperensiya kagaya ng National Communication Research Conference, Physical Theater Conference, at ang Asian Theatre Working Group ng International Federation for Theatre Research.

 

Ano ang aasahan ng ating komunidad at mga stakeholder sa pagpasok ng bagong akademikong taon? The DSCTA will continue to be strong, brave, and critical because we are guided by our vision, our mission, and our values. The Department is committed to continue teaching speech, theatre, and performance as modes of critical inquiries, creative expressions, and public engagements. We are committed to continue fostering our students with expanded analytical, technical, and imaginative capacities through praxes, research projects, and public services. We will continue to ensure diversity, inclusivity, and respect as driving forces for our responsibilities as academics and staff of the University of the Philippines. 

 

We join our stakeholders and our University in defending and fighting against the crises we face today. We continue to struggle for truth, academic freedom, and integrity. Padayon at masayang pagpapatuloy ng ating paglalakbay tungo sa #DSCTAdiyamante2034.
